Community Involvement

COMMUNITY

Caring for Our Community

Service is in our DNA here at SAH. We pride ourselves on providing premier service and support to our customers. However, serving our community is important to us as a company and to our individual employees. We support a wide range of causes that are important to our staff through raising money, collecting donations, and volunteering both time and talent. Community involvement is so important to us, we allow our staff to volunteer during work hours!

Serving Others at SAH

One of the unique ways that we promote community involvement as an organization is to utilize our annual company meetings as an opportunity to help others. One year, our staff split into teams to build bikes. The 23 bikes were then donated to the Reading School District for students with excellent academics and behavior.

Another year, our dedicated staff put on their aprons and prepared meals for 750+ people. Hundreds of sandwiches and countless servings of soup, chili, and trail mix were donated to Hope Rescue Mission, Opportunity House, Olivet Boys & Girls Club, and Meals on Wheels.

A month before the pandemic shut down the world as we knew it in 2020, our annual meeting was spent packing 1,000 shelf-stable meals for the homeless at New Journey Community Outreach. Below are some of the many other ways we engage in community involvement and outreach:

ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE OF BERKS COUNTY

We love our furry friends! The SAH team finds fun ways to support ARL, such as “Bring Your Pet to Work” days, “Pet Photos with Santa” and a “Cutest Pet Contest” to collect donations of treats, food, blankets, and other supplies.

EXETER AREA FOOD PANTRY & MIFFLIN COMMUNITY FOOD MINISTRY

From collecting non-perishable food, toys, and personal care products, to volunteering on food distribution days, our staff enjoys supporting the Greater Mifflin Food Ministry and Exeter Food Pantry. These ministries help people who have fallen on hard times in our local school districts, and during the pandemic, the number of people needing help has risen dramatically.

EXTREME MAKEOVER - HOME EDITION

One of the most unique community involvement opportunities we have had over the years was to participate in ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover. In May of 2010, SAH, Inc. was secretly asked to help a single mother who lost her husband to a heart attack 9 hours before the birth of their daughter. We were fortunate to be involved with all aspects of the project, from the surprise at a local fair to announce they were chosen, to the MOVE. THAT. BUS. moment at the big reveal.

SAH reached out to our vendors and asked for donations of Security, Fire, Central Vac, Intercom, and Video equipment for the house. All requests were graciously granted and we were able to provide the safety and security that helped make the family feel at home.

MARY'S SHELTER

Pregnant women who are in difficult situations with nowhere to go can find a home at Mary’s Shelter. Our employees raised money in 2018 to “adopt” two rooms when Mary’s Shelter moved to a new building. In 2021, our crew adopted two more rooms when Mary’s Shelter expanded their building and program to include housing for homeless, unaccompanied youth. Our team painted, furnished, and decorated these rooms to make them warm and inviting, in hopes that shelter residents would truly feel at home. As part of our ongoing community involvement, every year around Christmas, SAH employees donate gift cards from grocery stores and gas stations to Mary’s Shelter. They use these cards as gifts and incentives to the mothers in their care.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Each Friday, our employees take to the streets of Shillington and Mohnton to deliver meals to the elderly and homebound in our community through Meals on Wheels. In delivering these meals, employees also provide a few moments of conversation and a smile to these patrons, along with checking on their safety and well-being.

Past Involvement

SAH has stayed active in the community throughout the years and has no intention of slowing down. Some other organizations we’ve been involved in include:

• Donations of stocking stuffers, painting, and gardening at Bethany Children’s Home
• Sock collections for City Lights
• Collecting toiletries, socks & underwear, and serving at the food kitchen at New Journey Community Outreach
